In 1967 France was a founding member of the European Community that transformed itself into the European Union in November 1993. On October 8, 2009 the Teritorrial Council of the French overseas territory of Saint-Barthélemy voted 17:1 on a resolution to leave the EU. As consequence France asked on June 30 2010 the EU to exclude the isle of Saint-Barthélemy from the European Union. The council is going to give its approval on its December meeting. Saint-Barthélemy is to be independent as of 1st January 2011.
